Donald Keene's translation of this work is amazing. I found myself highlighting sections just to go back and ruminate on the language... That said, this is a book about a neurotic woman written by a man, so my inner feminist cringed at certain parts; like the helplessness of her mother, and the protagonist's romanticization of a love that had little basis in reality.

I cringed, much like I cringe when I see other women behave foolishly over a man. I wanted to reach inside and shake some sense into her, but like a melodramatic reality show, I couldn't turn away from her descent into self-destruction.

This is a relatively short read, but take your time and really delve into the language. There isn't much action, but the characters wax poetic on every emotion, and there is a lot to unpack. And while it was hard to sympathize with this portrayal of fading aristocrazy, the feelings of isolation and helplessness are emotions I can relate to all too well.

I loved this book just like I loved No Longer Human and I dare say Osamu Dazai is definitely one of my favorite authors. You can see his life in all of his books and something about the way they’re written scratches a good part of my brain.

"Mutluluk denen şey keder nehrinin dibinde belli belirsiz parlayan altın tozu gibi olmalı. Kederin sınırını geçince tuhaf bir alacakaranlık belirmeli."

Bu kadar hüzünlü olacağını düşünmemiştim ama çok etkileyiciydi.
