“I asked myself if I were doomed to die, numbed by the night dews, alone in the wasteland as the sun dropped completely from sight.”
It’s a shame because I really liked this book at the beginning; the aspect of mother/daughter issues driving the plot really interested me. But slowly the more annoying of Dazai’s beliefs started to show through the cracks like his odd sympathy for aristocrats or how “all men are the same.”
Kazuko’s so-called “romance” with Mr. Uehara is perhaps what soured this experience for me the most. There would be some merit to their morally wrong conjecture if it was built up well at all, but no, it seems that it’s out of Dazai’s wheelhouse. One nonconsensual kiss from 6 years ago has Kazuko sold on this wretched man. And her deciding that the purpose of life in the end is women having babies? What a spectacular fumble of a book which could have been so incredible and poignant.
