Yet another pretty alright novella on King's Different Seasons collection, both the framing narrative as well the story-within-a-story worked really well. The latter's resolution is a bit silly and ridiculous, but everything else works and doesn't overstay its welcome.

That was f****d up

This was a short little novella, and I feel a little guilty counting it as a book for the reading challenge this year, but here we are. Id already read “The Body” and “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” from the novella collection “Different Season” awhile ago, and as I am determined to read Stephen King’s entire catalog I needed to knock out “Apt Pupil” and “The Breathing Method”.

“The Breathing Method” was a quick and easy read, but wasn’t quite as good as the others in “Different Seasons” It’s about a young, unwed mother, who is determined to give birth to her baby no matter the cost. Definitely dark, and if you’re hoping for a happy ending, well I won’t spoil but this is Stephen King so take from that what you will.

Certainly the strangest and least impactful story in King's Different Seasons book, The Breathing Method is half the narrator describing his life and the strange club he is a member of and half the strange story one of his friends tells in the club. The story that is told is of mild interest, but the really interesting part was the club itself which sadly does not get completely explained. This is good in that it left me with a sense of mystery but also left me feeling unfulfilled. This reminded me of one of HP Lovecraft's earlier work where this is a great plot with much mystery but little in resolution. An interesting read but one i feel could have been better.

3.35 Stars. Great build up, and was thoroughly invested. However, I felt as though it just ended flat. There really weren't any complaints, I was just left feeling like I wanted more. King does have a talent of turning plain ole ordinary stories into interesting tales that you just can't put down.
