Because I watched the show, the book was easy to keep up with. If you never saw the show then take your time. Im actually pretty glad that the show stuck to the main idea of the series. There were a couple of small things that were not mentioned in the show that I actually appreciated. 

Overall pretty great writing, world building and amazing character development. I hate almost every character beside Eddard and Jon and Bran. Again, if you never seen the show, TAKE YOUR TIME WITH THE STORY.  I would say write a summery after each chapter.

The author is skilled in writing but is also too detailed. Listening to the audiobook, each chapter is 30+ minutes long, which is why there are so many content warnings listed. Some parts are very slow, some are fast paced. Some are tense, and some are relaxing. Overall a good read but needs paused often for a mental break from all the detail and heavy topics.
