Rereading twilight for the first time in over 10 years. I'm so nostalgic I love it. Like this is trash, the writing is weak, and Bella can't stop thinking about how she's not like other girls. Everything is so toxic and immature...but I love it

Yes... this book, one of the defining pieces of 2000s YA literature, is trash. The writing is poor. The main character is not only an idiot, but she chronically suffers from “I’m not like the other girls” syndrome and “I can’t walk 5 feet without my vampire boyfriend holding me upright or I’ll trip over absolutely nothing and fall down”. In fact, I think this book may have been the catalyst for all of the future YA protagonists who are just simply not like the other girls. The characters and dialogue are ridiculously cringey. The insta love is so rushed the characters are ready to die for each other before they’ve barely had a first date. The list of faults go on and on, but so does my love for this series.

My first experience reading this really sparked my love for reading. This series makes up the first books I ever bought for my collection. I made so many friends who shared my love of reading through this book and I have so many good memories attatched to these pages.

Rereading this just made me realize how much nostalgia I have surrounding this world, these characters, and this story. Even though this is objectively bad, you have to admit that it is pretty damn entertaining.

(P.S. Always have and always will be team Edward)

“About three things I was absolutely positive.
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was part of him — and I didn't know how potent that part might be — that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.”

Rereading the series after remembering how much I loved Bella as a 13 year old is such a trip. Absolutely all criticisms aimed at this book are valid except for one: I truly think that Bella Swan is a good character I'm so serious.
The writing in this series is generally not the strongest, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that Bella is still a relatable, likeable and genuinely charming character in 2024. It's a confusing one. On the one hand I do agree that she is a sort of Mary Sue, however I think there is just enough humour in her character. She is less a boring indication of a bad writer, and more the kind of silly, normal female character that feels like a genuine teenage girl rather than the ultra-independent, ultra-cool archetype that always felt too far removed from reality to be a truly loveable character.
People say that she is unrealistically melodramatic for wanting to be with her high school bf forever, those people have never met a teenage girl I fear. Bella Swan they could never make me hate you!!!

Twilight was such a huge thing when I was a kid and I’ve been a huge fan of the movies for a great part of my life. (Though they are positively the furthest thing from a cinematic masterpiece, they’re still some of my favorite movies to watch—a guilty pleasure if you will) but I have never read these books, no matter how many times I’ve said I would. And out of morbid curiosity, I decided to pick them up.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that I actually loved this book? I spent so much time smiling to myself as I read Bella and Edwards interactions. They were adorable. And book Edward compared to movie Edward? Not even remotely the same person. Edward lacked personality in the movies but he was so chaotically feeling in this book. The man gave me whiplash the way he shifted through so many feelings in one chapter but I enjoyed the progression of his character. (Even though he gaslighted the hell out of Bella.)

I was a touch stumped when they started exchanging I love you’s after such a short period of time (or maybe I’m just retarded, but I didn’t feel the progression of time in this book in the way I would reading others), but still, I really enjoyed this book and I’m actually a little mad at myself that it took me 13 years to jump on the twilight train.

I really enjoyed seeing the parallels between the novel and the movie and I was actually kind of disappointed with some of the information the movie left out and the way that certain characters were portrayed; especially Alice and James. I feel like we were robbed of really good content in the movies.

☆ It's iconic
☆ It's fun

○ Cringe ass lines
○ Toxic characters
○ Plot is generally bad

There's something hysterically compelling about it though so I'm definitely finishing the series.
