This is book seven of the Edge of Collapse series and the final book of this post-apocalyptic EMP survival series set in the small town of Fall Creek. The survivors of the town are shoring up their defences around town, knowing that more danger could come at them from any direction. Liam has managed to get Quinn back safely, but both have been badly injured and should be taking some time off to recover, but word of the General making his way towards them with a large force of National Guard under his control, brings back all the bad memories of Sutter, Rosamund and the militia being allowed to take over the town, supposedly to protect them all, but who ended up almost destroying the town. They find that Sutter and Rosamund were both related to the General and he has a personal vendetta against those in the town, for the death of his daughter. He blames one person in particular, even if it isn’t actually the one who actually killed her, but that secret isn’t widely known thankfully. The Governor of Michigan has authorised the General to use his forces to defeat a criminal force led by a man called Poe, who has been taking over the whole Mid-West area and has already overrun neighbouring states and done horrific things to the civilians living there. A swathe of destruction follows him and his thousands of criminal followers.
News of first the General and then possibly Poe and his force coming towards their small town, leaves the town council and its inhabitants with a difficult choice. Do they give up their homes and the town they call home, to flee for their lives and have to start all over again in an unknown place and all the dangers involved, or do they stay in pace and defend their town, even if it means they may all die? They may lose everything, but they feel that some things are worth fighting for and dying for, as they refuse to give up what many of their friends and family have already given their lives to defend. A town that belongs to them and they aren’t eager to have strangers forcing them out of their homes ever again! It may well be the town’s last stand, but they have Liam and his years of experience in the forces, to set up patrols, prepare defences and defensive positions and plans, for any attack that may come. They still don’t have any help coming from any of the neighbouring towns, who still blame them for all the damage and killing the militia did, but without any allies at all, this may well be the end!
Quinn is thinking more about her previous actions and the dangers they brought and wants a more involved position in the town’s defences, but first she has a lot of bridges to mend with those who love her. Her only family now is her gran Molly and she still has a lot to learn from her about how to survive in their new world. She also broke the close relationship she had with Milo after his father Noah’s death, so goes to pastor Bishop for a chat and some help to figure out how she can make amends to those she loves. Hannah is as strong if not stronger than ever, with baby Charlotte to be looked after, but also taking a huge role in organizing the defences and people in the town on all sorts of projects, not all of them for protection, but many for their plans for the new growing season as Spring is finally showing its progress across the area and food needs to be planted from their starter sets in the greenhouses all over town. Hannah has had more than many to contend with and it has made her a stronger person and Liam’s presence is one of strength for her and peace at last. Bishop and the remainder of the police force are working hard to ready the town for everything they need to do and the recent help of a few technically advanced young residents, have helped them to expand their early warning systems of communication, so fair warning will be provided of any dangers coming towards them.
This is an epic finale, with all your favourite characters, especially Ghost who plays such a fantastic role in protecting Hannah and her children, Milo and Charlotte, without any need of instructions from Liam. Two new additions in Charlotte and LJ, as well as his sister-in-law’s parents who help look after little LJ, are a nice touch of hope and renewal. Liam has a lot of nightmares and memories of things he has done in the past and believes he deserves to be without someone who loves him or cares for him deeply. But he has done a lot for Hannah and the community and they have grown to rely on him and his skills and from some, there are feelings of love and of family. Liam has finally found a home, a place he can call home and people he doesn’t want to leave behind. The main group of characters have gone through a lot of ups and downs over the series and faced dangers from day one. The way they have grown to help each other, teach each other skills needed to survive in their new normal, and protected each other, shows the community sense of feeling in Fall Creek and allowed them all to survive where many other communities have fallen apart into chaos and mayhem.
The finale has lots of fighting and determined actions, but also loss of loved ones for some. Nothing worth having, is ever without some pain! Freedom and the choice to live their lives in peace, in the place they call home, is worth any cost! I’m sad to see this is the end of these characters, but will go back and re-read the series from the beginning and wait for the boxset to come out, so I can do it all in one go! A fantastic series on the determination to survive some people have, under difficult circumstances, whatever they may be. Lessons to learn for many and lots of real life survival tips are given throughout the series, so very useful and knowledgeable. The main characters become firm favourites and you are left wondering what on earth will happen to each, as more danger comes to their doors. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and read it straight through in one go, up into the early hours of the day, as while I wanted to read it all as soon as possible, I also knew it would be the last book and knew I would be disappointed when I did finish. Now I just have to wait for the author’s next series and get stuck into that. I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Wonderful suspenseful end to the series. The few extra chapters of The End of Everything brought it all together aswell.
