This book definitely was not what I had been expecting. When I picked it up, I'd been gearing up for some awesome, zombie fighting action and, while there is certainly some of that, this book focused more on the mystery of her brother being missing. Not to say that was a bad thing, it just wasn't what I had expected initially going into it.

We start with a bang and a bunch of action! I loved the way we were thrust head first into a fight from the very first page. It immediately grabbed my attention and sent my heart racing! It was an excited and interesting way to introduce us to a major problem in the book and I thought it was done very well. It developed the world and gave us some perspective on exactly what was going on.

I enjoyed the mystery of this book a lot! I was constantly going back and forth trying to pick up on little hints as to who exactly was causing all of these problems and how they were pulling it off. It kept me glued to the pages, trying to piece together all the clues we were offered. And while I wasn't totally floored when we found out who was doing all this stuff, I still really enjoyed going back and piecing together the puzzle now that we'd been given the final picture.

I think my biggest problem with this book was just connecting with the characters. I thought Eleanor was very brave and independent but she didn't always think he actions through. And I really didn't understand why she did some of what she did. Why couldn't she tell anyone that her brother was missing? It seemed like a smart thing to do. If I was in this situation, the first thing I would have done is tell my parents and then call the police. However, Eleanor did neither and I just didn't understand why. And I didn't get why her mom did some of the things she did either! I get that she wants everyone to think she's wealthy and living well but is image really worth being broke just so you can throw a couple parties and impress a few people? That part really bothered me.

The Spirit-Hunters were an interesting group of people and I enjoyed the parts with them the most. They seemed like the only ones with a bit of sense to them and they did what they had to do to protect the people in the city.

I enjoyed this book despite some problems I had with the characters. It was mysterious and held my attention for the most part. I'm anxious to find out what happens and where this story line takes the characters. If you're a fan of mystery with a bit of zombie action, then I think that you'd enjoy this book a lot!

Wow. Someone needs to explain to me why this series tanked because I adored this book. I loved the characters, the Shakespeare references, the concept. Her portrayal of the Spirit Hunters and the dead is great. Was it just the timing? Just a tad behind the steampunk craze? I really don't get it.

Dennard's writing is very accessible and I inhaled it. I saw the twist at the coming at the end, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book. It was pretty action packed and of course, I loved the romance. Clarence gutted me.

Really looking forward to the next one.

More like 4.5

Upon finishing the book, I sat there in tears and whispered ... "what...?"

It was pretty exciting this novel. The heroine is a gutsy girl, who can stand up for herself, is intelligent, witty, and doesn't let herself get carried away in sight of pretty boys. Her one goal is to save her brother, even if it means putting herself in danger.

The writing was great, the book was full of fast paced, exciting actions... and zombies. Although, if you're a zombie fan, don't read it for the zombies... they're kind of more in the background.

The relationship between Eleanor and her romantic interest Daniel, was a really good one. It developed at a nice speed and they were there for each other. He came to respect her, and she to tolerate him. SO I DEMAND TO KNOW WHY THE END HAPPENED THE WAY IT DID!!! I DEMAND TO KNOW!!!!!

They better happen in the next book. Like Now.

Initial Thoughts:I really really enjoyed this book. I know people love Susan Dennard's writing, and I'm definitely one of them. The other thing I really enjoyed about this book was the ending and how it left me wanting more of the characters, but it was also a good ending with tying up a lot of loose ends. I'm definitely going to continue on with the trilogy, I just do not feel like I have to right away at this point.

Full review to come.

Eleanor Fitt has a lot to deal with. The dead are popping up in Philadelphia, her brother Elijah has mysteriously not returned from his travels as promised, and her mother is determined to see her married off quickly to reverse the family's lack of fortune after her father died. As Eleanor becomes more determined to locate Elijah, she engages with the spirit hunters, an eclectic group that has traveled from Chicago to quell the dead. But opinions about the group are varied, with many believing that their intentions are less than honorable. Is Eleanor safe in their company? And will they be able to help her find Elijah before he becomes a victim to the necromancer?

Really liked this one! intriguing start to the series and I've always been interested in zombie-like things. like the historical fiction element too! series review to come

This was a fun read! A few rough spots as with any debut but I really enjoyed it. (Honestly I was so anxious to find out what happened next sometimes I read too fast and had to go back for a detail). My favorite thing was never totally knowing which side anyone was on and if they were good or bad. So much fun second-guessing everyone!

3.5 stars. review coming soon.

I really wanted to like this book, but I had a difficult time getting through it. Maybe the rest of the series is better, but I felt like it lacked development and there wasn't anything really grasping my attention.

Something Strange and Deadly is an action packed zombie novel by debut author Susan Dennard. The book definitely holds true to its title, it’s full of lots of strange and deadly things that will keep you hooked to the pages and wanting more!

Sixteen year old Eleanor Fitt is on a mission to find her brother that has mysteriously gone missing. Along with her search, she’s also dealing with her mother who is trying to marry her off to any rich man that she can find, and also with the zombies that are rising in her town. With the help of a couple of new friends, they must find the person who is responsible for raising the dead, the same person that may also have kidnapped her brother as well.

Eleanor was a very interesting character. She was not one to sit around and doing nothing, but she took action in her own hands and did what she had to do. She did not let her fear hold her back while she searched for her brother. She is such a great heroine; these kinds are my absolute favorite. The few times we see her rattled is when Daniel, one of the Spirit-Hunters helping her in her search, left her in mess of confusion. The relationship between Eleanor and Daniel was adorable, and I love that it grew over time, and didn’t happen right away. They make a great team!

The secondary characters in the book were engrossing as well. Joseph and Jie, who were also Spirit-Hunters, were each interesting in their own unique ways. The one character that constantly left me in a state of confusion was Clarence Wilcox, would be suitor to Eleanor. I just couldn’t figure him out, and while I didn’t want to like him, I ended up loving him a bit in the end.

The thing I liked most about this book is that there is always something going on in it. I read this in one day, which doesn’t happen for me often. I just HAD to know what was going to happen! The world-building was so creative; I loved reading the descriptions of the time period. There was no cliffhanger ending for this book. While there is a build-up for the next novel, the novel was wrapped up nicely, and I definitely had closure at the end.

Overall, if you love a good zombie novel, you should definitely check out Something Strange and Deadly. It will not disappoint! I’m itching to get my hands on the next book in this awesome series.

Happy Reading!
