make sure you are open to hearing about sex b/c and sexual connotation towards black women because there is quite a bit of this.

The author’s writing style felt contemporary, fresh which made reading the book a enjoyable  and not a linguistic chore. That being said it deals with very intense themes and reflects back how complicated people/our lives are.

This book had me speaking out loud to it many times, asking “whyyyy??” and willing the story to be different for the protagonist, Queenie.  We meet Queenie, a mid-twenties Jamaican British woman living in London, as she is navigating her romantic relationship, her friendships, her family, her career, and ultimately her self-worth.

The author did a great job making the foggy bad-decisioned twenties into a tangible cringe that I felt as a reader, while also giving proper space to the more deeply rooted experiences and traumas from Queenie’s past that contribute to her current actions and feelings.  Real life experiences are not skirted around, they are in every step of the story in a meaningful way.

I love a book that prioritizes therapy and healing yourself, and one that acknowledges how challenging it is to be the first to make that generational shift is extra special.  Her relationship with her grandparents had my heart feeling all the things.

This book was light at points with true humor and more serious at others while Queenie assessed her health, and all throughout it kept reader empathy front-and-center.  There were many times I hated a decision she made or situation she was in, but the author always kept me rooting for Queenie.  This is a popular Bookstagram pick, and I’ll happily join in and recommend this to others.

This book gave me so much anxiety but it was so good I couldn’t put it down. I had so much love for the main character and wanted things to work out for her so badly.
