Trudno o bardziej seksistowską i rasistowską książkę.
Jedna gwiazdka za lekkość, druga za język.

This was a good book. Nice and cozy, and absorbing. I just wanted to climb into the book and make myself at home. Loved it!

I read this book as a child in the 70’s and as a pre-teen and it made me think about being a better person and simpler virtues. I re-read it as an adult just now and realized that it’s really a story to teach children values. Unfortunately it has not aged well and I would not dream of reading it to a young girl now. Too many sexist, racist and classist lectures and images although for its time it was likely considered wholesome and also liberal in many ways. My childhood self would have given it a 5, my current self sadly considers a 2 generous so I am settling for a 3. I was also frustrated by the audible reader who had the right tone but mispronounced enough words to frustrate me.

Oh my goodness this was such a good book and I already have the next one in the series, so I am all set. Sweet, loving, charming, delightful.

Charming, but almost sickeningly sweet. I grew up with a lot of boys, though (my mother's friends ALL had boys), so it did bring me back to my childhood.
I read it serially, as it was almost too much to take more than a chapter at a time, and it made for nice fluff when I needed to read for just ten minutes.
SPOILER ALERT:

The only thing that bothered me was how affectionate Uncle Alec is with Rose, and then we find out in the last few pages that he had been in love with her mother (his brother's wife), and he adored Rose because she was so like her mother. For me, that turned all of the patronizing cheek stroking into something a bit more icky.

Different than Little Women, but the author's style and messages are consistent and made me happy. Recommended for middle grade readers. Content: family strife.
(Note: the sequel, Rose in Bloom, deals with alcholism and depression. Also, Rose's eight male cousins become potential suitors due to different customs/rules; I didn't expect this from the first book and was slightly weirded out by the fact that some of her cousins were attracted to her.)

I love this sweet story that shows it's age but in the most delightful way!
