I enjoyed Riggs' Peculiar Children series so I was absolutely coming into this expecting strangeness. This is definitely not as "peculiar" but I absolutely loved the storyline and adventures we are being taken on. The magic in this is easy to understand and I love the overlap with the "muggle" world. The story starts off a little rough in my opinion since we are thrust right into Leopold's life in a way that I wasn't able to wrap my head around the dynamic of his life. It definitely took me a few chapters to get really hooked but it certainly will hook you sooner rather than later. The magic element plays a relatively limited part in this first book as we really just focus on seeing Leopold grow as a person and gain his own confidence. However with that said, it does introduce a lot of fantasy elements that I am eager to learn more about. I am very interested in seeing where this series will take us as there is still much to learn about Sunder and the various characters (plus suspicious plots) at play. There is certainly a lot more world building to be done but knowing that this is a series leaves me optimistic that the future books will continue to provide great answers to my questions. The wrap up of this book leaves me wanting more but it does not end on a major cliffhanger thankfully.
