A dark reflection on human greed and the capacity of people to deceive those around them in the name of self-interest. This book examines the systematic ways the American government and legal system enabled the theft of land, money, and life of the Osage people. The story moved quickly and seamlessly, sharing fact through narrative. The story was engaging, but it also leaves you raw, forcing you to confront the darkness, horror, and pain experienced by a family and community.

Maybe it was just very slow as an audiobook, but I thought it could have benefited from editing and consciousness.

Chilling. Very chilling. David Grann does an excellent job of narrating this story. Towards the end of the second act I started to think it was beginning to drag on a bit as some non-fiction tends to do in order to be "long enough to be worth a full book" - but nope! The third act was entirely new, even MORE chilling, and Grann uncovers previously unreported information that adds to much to the story. An excellent read, and it really makes you think about the lingering relationship between the Native Americans and the settlers of the American West during the early 20th century.

interesting story and kept my attention well

Listen as audiobook and I feel like that didn’t help the story- sometimes felt like a lecture other times felt like a story, it’s a great story to learn/hear I wish the writing was a little different

Great read. The story felt like you were participating as a detective uncovering the murders.
