Jesus Christ. I wanted to stop reading after about 30% but decided to tough it out. I can’t listen to Silas be an annoying and controlling man-child for another second.
Maggie didn’t tell you she KIND OF has a sister? Boohoo. Maybe you’re not entitled to know every bit of family trauma when you’ve known her for a few weeks and basically coerced her into dating?????
So gross. So controlling. I feel so icky.

"Confidence comes from knowing that whatever the situation, you know you'll make the best of it. Confidence is certainty in your ability to rise."

I kept hearing great things about Maggie Moves On, so I decided to give in and finally read the story myself. I've been meaning to try Lucy Score's writing for a while now, and I have to say that I definitely understand why so many people seem to love her books. True, the smut was without a doubt WAY too much and WAY too open door for me. I can't deny that there was skimreading involved, and those scenes were the main reason I ended up docking a star. BUT. I did love the rest of the story. While things can be said about certain aspects of the descriptions of both Silas and Maggie being incredibly cliche, there was also something about them that made it very easy to warm up to them. Maggie Moves On also has such a great cast of side characters, and the overall dynamics worked really well. And Kevin! I loved how the dog just kept popping up (and totally stealing the show at times). There were quite a few elements incorporated into the plot besides the romance, but I personally really enjoyed how everything was woven together. And who doesn't love a bit of a treasure hunt and historical mystery?! I definitely want to try more of her stories in the future.

I’m now convinced that the reason this book has such a high rating is that most people can’t stand to make it all the way to the end.

The female MC is cool, the premise is cool… the guy is a certified creep.

He sexually harasses her at her workplace from the moment they meet, doesn’t leave her alone when she says to, immediately becomes disturbingly over-protective (controlling), constantly thinks he knows what’s best for her or that he’ll get her to change her mind… and that’s just in the beginning. I liked the woman, premise, and side characters enough that I kept pushing through, but coming back to it after a break it’s somehow even worse.

I don’t want to read the ending in part because it needs a restraining order, not wedding bells.

Silas just kept doing things that would make me want to scream "run away - this guy has too many signs of control or anger issues".  TBH their relationship seemed kind of toxic at multiple points in the book.  Don't even get me started on the whole theme of "getting mad shows you care".  I mean I get that you need to feel something but his "mad" is too over the top and controlling for it to be cool/attractive.  This was written in 2022, shouldn't we stop grooming women into thinking his behavior is normal or, worse yet, sexy? I was holding out hope that he might change his ways but alas the ending just made me want to have my own little Silas tantrum.  Please just move on Maggie.

Yikes. This story was kind of a mess but I could barely see it through all the red flags Silas was waving.

This was a struggle for me. At first I was really excited. Renovation? Interior design? YouTube show? Traveling/wanderlust? Cute small town with an attractive guy who knows what he wants? A pitbull named Kevin? It had all the fixings for a really lovable romance. And then Silas showed his colors, and it was downhill from there. There was the dash of ableism with the ‘gimped’ remark, The first shitty scene with Wallace (but that is just a me problem), and the concepts sprinkled throughout that fighting or putting so much work into a relationship meant it was worth fighting for. That is the most fucked up, toxic, heterosexual bullshit I’ve ever fucking heard. So many people in this book, in this cast, think shitty things are actually good in a relationship and that’s a really harmful thing to be putting out to the public. As well as Silas is the worst boyfriend I’ve ever fucking come across he’s so selfish, he’s not respectful towards women, he was pushy and arrogant and annoying and I really fucking hated his character. He ruined the book for me and I spent a good 30 to 40% in the middle wishing the book was over.

By the end I had really liked how it ended, I thought the wrapups of the characters were cool, I liked Kevin, I liked the kittens, I liked the sister, the dad, Maggie, Cody, and the other people for the most part. Dean was really bitchy, and a downer, and Silas really just fucked everything up but if you take out the dash of ableism, the concept of the really shitty relationships that was a narrative throughout the whole thing, and Silas in his entirety then it would have been an enjoyable read.
