my first ali hazelwood. as a infrequent reader of romance i was thoroughly entertained by these freaks (complimentary).
This was redeemed in the 2nd half the first 30-40% was hardddd to get through but once it started to pick up pace it was hard to put down. I was honestly confused for first chunk, it was written weird imo.
Pen really really annoyed me…. I still don’t truly know how I feel about her. Also I didn’t love how luk and Scarlett had like a weird miscommunication thing going on. It was bothering me that they couldn’t just determine how to talk to each other. It got figured out as the story went on but the hiding feelings was annoying a bit. It ended on a good note and I’m so happy we saw a small part of Luks family. Would’ve loved to meet his dad a little more.

Deep End by Ali Hazelwood — ★★★★☆
“What I want from you requires enthusiastic consent, not convincing.”
“Confidence is not about being able to do shit. Confidence is showing up, and trying, and not giving up because deep in your heart you know who you are and what you’re capable of.”
This was such an unexpected delight! What stood out most was how refreshingly warm this take on BDSM was. Instead of the usual broody, borderline-douchey MMCs often found in dark romance, Lukas was steady, kind, and genuinely caring toward Scarlett—making their relationship feel realistic and healthy. I also loved that it balanced a “vanilla” love story with the kinkier aspects, showing both can coexist beautifully.
The quotes were absolute gems—thoughtful, empowering, and perfectly in tune with the story’s themes. And as a bonus, Olive and Adam’s cameo? Loved it (and yes, they were alive and well in my head too).
That said, I did wish Scarlett checked in more with Lukas instead of focusing so much on Pen, and the resolution felt a bit too convenient. The Sweden trip and reconciliation wrapped up a little too neatly and quickly.
Still, overall it’s a strong read—equal parts sweet and steamy, with that irresistible “reserved in the streets, wild in the sheets” energy. Ali Hazelwood once again proves she can take familiar tropes and give them her own fresh spin.
