“I’m afraid of the unpredictability of existing. I’m afraid of not being able to control the direction of my life. I’m afraid that no matter how much I plan, I won’t be able to avoid hurtful and sad things. But above all…” I take a deep breath and laugh softly, because what I’m about to say is ridiculous, even if it’s true. Even if it’s me. “Mostly, I’m afraid of attempting something and not being perfect at it.”

Deep End by Ali Hazelwood follows the story of Vandy, a D1-college level diver and a Swedish guy that swims. (I don't remember his name for the life of me.) They explore just a little bit of the sub/dom kink and also compete in sports and are also genius doctors.

Who would like this book: This book has all of Hazelwood's usual stuff. It was a quick, fun read and never got too heavy. The sex scenes were super hot, though I will admit I expected the whole sub/dom thing to get explored a bit more.

Why only 3 stars: Pacing for one. It was very, very clear from the start that the male lead wanted a relationship with Vandy. It takes Vandy like 95% of the book to get there. And I don't really know why, because she's supposed to be a genius. It just dragged on and on. I don't mind the miscommunication trope but this took it tooooooo far.

The other star came off because I just never connected with the characters. Maybe its because I'm not athletic? Maybe it is because I just don't find it very believable that someone could be a lab assistant, studying for the MCats, and diving professionally, or maybe it was Penn. (Ugh. Penn. Don't get me started on Penn or I'll take off another star.) It just was very... oh, by the way, these two are super duper geniuses, and then we almost never see them doing anything academic... Vandy almost fails her German course. And I 100% get that people can be good at one subject and not others but... I guess that is my point? We only really spend time with Vandy failing German, not Vandy doing all of the smart, future doctor stuff I would think she'd have to do to get into a competitive med school.

“It sounds so simple coming from his mouth. The alphabet. The most basic of arithmetic. Us, being in love.”

I love Ali Hazelwood. Was this as kinky as it could’ve been? No. But it was cute and sweet and once again I love a chaotic romance with someone emotionally constipated learning how not to be. The ending was rushed, but it was still delightful.

I love men that Ali writes.
That being said what the fuck is with all of the 'deprived sex' talk when there was none?
