This series has so much going for it, it's hard to give it justice in a quick review. But, in a nutshell, I think one of the greatest gifts to humanity that fantasy (and one can argue, fiction in general, but I argue fantasy does it best because of its YA appeal, interest, and escapism) provides is slyly tricking us into considering the world (real or imagined) from a different perspective than we would otherwise. Making us feel empathy and recognize the injustice of things that happen to the characters, and how we would feel in their place. and that we later realize also happen in similar ways to people in the real world.

This series' world and language are all-encompassing and so natural, not at all forced. The words White and Black are never used. And yet, I don't think people can read a series like this and still feel complacent about racism, colonialism, caste, and maybe even the environment. You don't have to beat someone over the head to educate. Though some people might benefit from an informational bludgeoning...

I could listen to Jemisin's worldbuilding for hours on end and still want more. This novel culminated the trilogy in such a fascinating and beautiful way.

N. K. Jemisin could write a phone book and I'd but it, read it, and more then likely love it.
I have yet to read something by her that I haven't at the very least loved.

4.5*, it would be an impossible task to top the first book.

would’ve loved more alabaster tbh, probably also more of his backstory
