Overall, I really enjoyed the story in this book. However, I was very put off by some problematic content (lots of fatphobic language, one particular scene of questionable choices around race). I wanted to like this book much more, but I could not ignore these instances. I liked the characters and the plotting overall, it’s just unfortunate that a lot of little moments built up and left a bad taste in my mouth and overshadowed the storytelling. I will say that I did like the ending of this one. King is hit or miss with endings and I thought this was handled well.

This was almost 4 stars for me. Almost. I just felt that the story took turns and was disjointed. The plot changed multiple times and it felt like there were multiple stories all at the same time and nothing fully got fleshed out. Still enjoyed it, but I'd want to reread it now that I've gone through the whole thing.

King finally learned how to write a great ending! One that I didn't see coming, and one that was satisfying and stayed true to the plot. My one gripe is that he alluded to the Shining and I only found that to be a little too supernatural (or something) than this book is ultimately about, so it felt a little bit weird to place it there. But the themes of debt, sacrifice, and hard decisions are handled well. (And at the end, I cried a little.)
