Honestly didn't expect this book to be what it was, but as a light-hearted children's book it was really great!

silly, punny, good old Anthony Horowitz humor. Like [b:Half-Moon Investigations|831893|Half-Moon Investigations|Eoin Colfer|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1349039652s/831893.jpg|933411], but a little less sophisticated (if you can call Half-Moon sophisticated).

Loved this when I was a kid but looking back I hate the main character. Nick is so rude to everyone he meets in the narration and the word play is so obvious and boring. Plus my first thought about the Maltesers key was that it must’ve been a barcode so the twist was very predictable. So much of time was spent explaining what a barcode was though so maybe they weren’t as popular when this was first published so not obvious then?

Normally I love the Horowitz work but this one hit a weird chord with me and didn't feel quite right. His brother really annoyed me with his stupidity and a couple of times the situations were daring and amazing. It was still a fun read but the twist didn't work as well for me as I hoped. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it picks up.

Revisiting books I loved as a kid, and I thought I remembered more than what I did. Overall rather enjoyable.

Aimed at teens, this is a pacey, funny story full of silly jokes - a very enjoyable read.
