SO MUCH racism, classism, and xenophobia. The awesomely independent, feminist women are villains. Hastings never spares a thought for his wife, though other characters do. I was almost too irritated by offensive historic rich white people garbage to pay any attention to the plot.
I don't have anything against international syndicate conspiracy plots. I have plenty against them when they make no sense whatsoever. How did the Four hook up? What's stopping them from turning on each other? What do they have in common -- because I can't see any points of commonality.
There was some nice suspense and action!Hastings, though, and he wasn't entirely as stupid as usual.
