Oh boy, I was warned to skip this but bullishly went ahead anyway on my journey to read the entire series. Even without being attached to the Agatha Christie name, it would be a subpar book. It is a silly book of fantastical events, dull antagonists, and a very dissatisfying ending. Very unlike other instalments I have read, and hope that Christie never repeated this mistake.

My fifth Poirot and I love it! It was a bit odd with so many cases with an underlying connection of the Big Four, but I got used to it after a while.
I never thought I’d see Poirot against mafia but here we are. Somehow it just doesn’t go with his character? Most stories I’ve read with Hercule Poirot in them are cozy, mind boggling yet cozy and on a smaller scale. But for mafia like villains, I need more insight. I want to know why they are what they are. Who they are. How they got together. The writing also felt choppy but I read somewhere that Christie wrote and released the chapters are individually and it was later mushed into a book I think? So that makes sense. This was very much James Bond like however the story doesn’t match with Poirot’s usual cases. Don’t get me wrong, it was fun but needed more substance.

this one has aged particularly badly, racism-wise. it also goes super-soap with identical twins, faked deaths, and a strange jump from the manor murder to (now) a serial-y, world-at-stake plot. twinkly-eyed poirot versus the wily murderer, wonderful; obsessive poirot as humanity’s only hope against a shadowy cabal of take-over-the-world supervillains... not as good a time.

Felt more like a James Bond novel than a Hercule Poirot mystery. Give me the grand estates and parlor room murders over world domination. Still, the characters are as interesting as ever.
