This was not the most enjoyable Christie I've read. In fact, I found this story of a vast criminal conspiracy to be firmly in B-movie territory, with the story veering into florid and implausible moments frequently. I did, however, enjoy Poirot berating Hastings for his always simple approach to thinking, because those moments are always funny.
Just re-read this one, it is one of my favorites.
What can I possibly give this book but four stars?
Arguably the least "Poirot" of the Hercules Poirot series I've read so far, it is still an amusing read.
I do think that this kind of story is best suited for a more active protagonist who can punch his way out of situations where it's required. I'm rather glad the rest of the series remained more in keeping with the standard smaller mystery.

It had a lot of action, and Poirot’s interactions with Hastings were amusing, but this isn’t a very good Poirot. The mystery is a bit of a mess, and it’s over-the-top. Silly, compared to others.
Meh. Our buddy Hastings is back for more annoying commentary but we all have a good laugh at his expense in this one. More spy/conspiracy than mystery but not in a fun way.
I like this one way more than the first time I read it, understanding more about the conventions of the genre, and world history, than I did then. Plot-wise, I'd move it up to three stars at least. But it's still two stars because it's Just That Racist.
SOMEONE DARED TO CHALLENGE THE GREAT HERCULE POIROT!!!! He must stop this. And he does.
