A must-read for children of divorced parents who, as adults, are struggling to navigate their own romantic relationships.

I read this book when I was trying to save my marriage, but things I learned from it have been instrumental throughout my divorce process, namely keeping my children's perspective and needs foremost in my mind. Highly informative and based on tons and tons of research and interviews spanning 20 years of the lives of children of divorce. The author is foremost in her field. I'm sorry if this is how some of you are learning that I am getting a divorce. Feel free to call or email.

The unexpected legacy of divorce is a longitudinal study following children of divorced parents. In this book, we get a multitude vignettes and overarching findings that illustrate the effects of divorce. A lot of these elements serve to really hone and explore the unseen trauma of children that have been affected by divorce.

Even though this is non-fiction, it isn't dry. It was engaging and very emotional at times. I think this a book that everyone should read at some point especially if you are a child of divorce. For me, as a child of divorced parents, this book helped me make sense of my own childhood. It made me think and cry and think and then cry again.

As a child of divorce myself I sort out literature on how divorce impacts the children involved and how long term these impacts can be. I believe the world would be a better place if everyone had read this so that both adults and children involved in divorce could better work to mitigate potentially negative impacts and so that those who have little experience with divorce in their lives can better empathise with those who do.
