Fun, mature comic. Kinda clever, too.

If you are familiar at all with the works of Jason Shiga (say, [book:Bookhunter|2159700] or [book:Meanwhile|7229730] or my first introduction --- the minicomic [book:Fleep|9058150]), you probably know two things about his works. First, they are often puzzle novels (quite literally with [book:Meanwhile|7229730]) with the plot advanced by the careful and precise solving of the puzzle. Second, a Shiga protagonist is hyper-rational, well-informed, and always up to the task. (He's also often called Jimmy Yee, but that's besides the point.)

So Demon is no exception to the above. It just also includes mass murder, decapitations, nudity, and semen. (It may be a judgement on either me or the book that I believe it has one of the best semen jokes I've ever read.) The whole thing is bloody, disgusting, funny, absolutely fascinating, and a wonderful setup for the volumes to follow.

In short, if you've ever read any Jason Shiga and liked it AND can handle the darker (or more puerile) material mentioned above, this is a great read. If you've never read any Jason Shiga, DO NOT START WITH THIS (unless, of course, you are really into all of the darker (or more puerile) stuff mentioned above).

[a:Jason Shiga|469075|Jason Shiga|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1391381898p2/469075.jpg] loves mazes and puzzles. It's very well documented in his deceptively simple looking art. With Demon, we get a dark as Hell puzzle. What happens if, having lost everything, and committed a heinous crime, you decided to end it all, only to find out that you couldn't die?

Why or how he can't die is, initially a mystery that that protagonist (Jimmy) solves after committing many more equally heinous crimes.

I'm not usually a fan of books that center around morally reprehensible people but there's something about Jimmy's exasperation, initial, cluelessness, and desire not to have someone else in control of his reprehensible power that had me rooting for him.

That was...weird. But also cool. I'd recommend this to, well, all the guys I hung out with in college. They'd like it. Especially Mike W., Anthony, and Jason - I think they'd like it. It's a little wonky, a little graphically gross, and a little funny.

This was nicely diverting & very different from the two other works I have read by Jason Shiga.

Mr Shiga: who broke your heart or what job or project or thing was sucking the life blood out of you that prompted this exercise in the first place?

Remarks on location:
I am moving this as a replacement to My Sister Rosa which my roommates keep snagging & then returning. Next time it comes back I'm putting a Post-it on it saying "See me for recommendations". I'm hoping this is too nihilistic for them.

Update: My roommate's oldest kid loved this!

I can't say Andy didn't warn me that this was messed up but....WOW! This book is so wrong and so right. I just hope that Shiga has a plan for where this will all end because this is a hell of a start!
