This took me FOR.EV.ER. I don’t know why I struggled with this one so much - it was the audiobook and I even had it set to 1.3x speed…maybe if I’d have read it instead it would have been easier.

The story itself was fine - yet another sordid, abusive tale of CoS and how manipulative and evil they are. I wouldn’t read this if you’re newer to the topic, as it’s pretty heavy with terminology and such.

I read a few reviews that knocked this book, but if you are familiar with the story in the book, you understand why this may not be a great literary work. It is a truly personal tale told in a specific voice, that of the author, which makes this book so great. It isn't overly dramatized or emotional, strictly the facts as remembered by the author, and is exactly what it claims to be.

I agree with others that this is not an ideal first book on Scientology due to the extensive use of terminology but overall a good and important read. Hard to believe it’s almost 20 years later and nobody has been held accountable for the extreme treatment of people including children that continues.

Loved it
Highly recommended
It is unbelievable that this cult gets away with everything.
What is it going to take to stop the abuse?
Keep up the great work

It's a well written account of one person's life working for Scientology. I was hoping for more explanation behind some of the religious beliefs, etc...but other than pointing out some contradictions, etc there weren't many. Overall, still an interesting read though.

Marc Headley's account of his time at Gold Base in the Sea Org and escape. Lots of day to day stuff, which has not been the focus of the other books I've read on Scientology. There is a glossary in the back to deal with the many, many acronyms used, but I'm not sure this is first book you should read on the subject. Definitely recommended for anyone interested in the topic.
