I remember watching the cartoon series Redwall as a child, and enjoying it. I decided to read this, because the audiobook had a full cast, and I joined a challenge to listen to a full cast audiobook. What a wonderful decision to choose this, what a warm childhood delight. Obviously it is quite formulaic, but that does not take away from the fact that it is so lovable. The characters feel so familiar, and being able to enjoy a story about what is right, and good winning is very refreshing in a world that is so difficult to live in.

I love this whole series! My cousin had a lot of them, and I read them in elementary school.

Yeah, pretty good. For a middle grade fantasy, it's really good. The issue I have with a lot of fantasy (a total me problem, btw) is I struggle to keep up with the big casts. Especially with the villain's assistants, it could be a lot at time. But, as I said, that's a total me issue.

I personally enjoyed the characters and appreciate the powerful female characters from a male author is the 80s, but the only character I was really invested in was Cluny (the villain) - maybe because I'm biased towards rats lol but probably since he felt the most unique to me and in this book he was a large focus. The other characters were decently memorable but I struggle and bit with keeping up with the cast so I can't remember much besides species, one or two traits, and some of their names.

I'm willing to read the rest of the series but probably won't think of it as anything special, just something fun and easy to read.

I loved Brian Jacques - his stories were some of the first "chapter books" I read in 1st/2nd grade - I simply devoured his books and read them over and over.

I find so much nostalgia in this series. Matthias and Martin are great and all, but I think Friar Hugo deserves his own tapestry for all of his gourmet feasts!

Brian Jacques was one of the greats, and can be enjoyed by all ages.

This would be a great starter  book to get a kid into epic fantasy.  Maybe an older middle grade to young YA aged reader, though. I'm a bit disturbed by all the reviewers tagging this book "lighthearted" and calling it "cute." There are quite a few gruesome deaths. Not graphically described on the page, but a sensitive child might find that sort of thing upsetting.  I would have, as a young reader who was used to nice stories about girls with ponies, or Nancy Drew solving mysteries.
