I do love a gay friends to lovers trope and Linus and Arthur are the best part of the book by far. Also as a side note I have never hated a audiobook reader this much. Wow I do not like his vocal choices for any of the characters. The variety of accents and voices makes zero sense. Why would two people have different accents (one southern and one British) if they have lived on the same island for their whole lives and never left??? How would that ever make any sense??? Felt like he was trying to force diversity in a weird way when it was unnecessary because the book is already extremely diverse character wise. I loved the ending and the world building and I will be reading the next book BUT this is not a strong book at all. I am really hopeful that the next book will be better and that this book was being used to set up the characters and world.
The epilogue eludes to a great new plot for the second book so Im hopeful.

I don’t know if there’s any other author out there that could literally take a blob and make him into one of the most heartwarming and real characters ever. And he’s just one of the children! Each one could be seen as odd or monstrous in some way, but Klune does an absolutely wonderful job of making them all real and amazing and so very love able. Linus and Arthur were amazing too, and while this is definitely written for all audiences, it doesn’t take anything away from the story. It’s a story of kindness, acceptance, family, and love; and it’s brilliant and wonderful in every way.

Every time I reread this book, I just fall a little more in love with this world Klune has created. It’s almost like watching a movie with how absolutely vividly he paints all these fantastical characters. It’s one of those books you can come back to and each time catch something a little bit new, while still feeling like you’re falling into a comfortable favorite. I recommend this to everyone, especially in the world we’re currently living it. It’s a book about acceptance and love, and we could all use a little more of that.

What a fun story. This was my first T.J. Klune book and I loved it. Such fun characters that are easy to fall in love with and I totally didn't tear up at all I swear. The story hits a little close to home when it comes to the society they are living in, and I hope we don't get there. I can't wait to read more T.J. Klune.
