This is a pixar movie in book form. By which I mean: cute story and characters, engaging scenery, wholesome message. But also a bit predictable, superficial, and almost formulaic. When you've read the synopsis you already know how it will end, and that means that the way the story is told is more important than the plot itself. I mostly liked the execution of the characters, especially Lucy and Sal, and the dialogue between Linus and the children. But the way problems kind of dissolved felt too easy, the division between good and bad a bit too simplistic. This was most jarring when characters gave morality lessons to bigots in speeches. Then, the writing felt very much tapped into current left wing online subcultures; there is nothing wrong with that per se but I suspect it will feel quite dated quite soon, which contrasts with the message that is probably meant as more timeless than that. Also, a book offers do much more space for complexity and depth than a tumblr post, and this was not utilised to its full potential. Overall though an enjoyable read, especially for a younger audience.

I don’t like fantasy or writing reviews but glad I gave this book a chance… really pulled on the heartstrings when thinking about parallels between any kind of prejudice that is protested and how magical beings are treated in the book… just have to pop that bubble
