The book started of alright with the travels to another land, but once he got there I just got bored and it never picked up again.

Erewhon by Samuel Butler

Even though this is the 150 year anniversary addition, I had never heard of it before.

I love the use of English in classics and this definitely has that. It is a story in which the narrator finds a unknown civilization with strange ideals and beliefs (in which the author uses to satirize the Victorian society of his day.) There is adventure, a smidge of romance, and some eye rolling.

This was definitely a case of picking a book by its cover but I still enjoyed it for what it had to offer.

Content warning: This is an old novel in which they use outdated terminology of tribal peoples, race, and pretty much anyone that doesn’t fit the mold of English Gentleman.

I was hoping to love this (Erewhon is Nowhere backwards, and how is that not fantastic?), but it was only so-so. It's a satire in the style of Gulliver's Travels by Johnathan Swift, and I'm actually not fond at all of Gulliver's Travels, but I didn't know what it was like when I bought it for 85 cents at Ed McKay's. Ah well.

truly don’t know what to say about this book. incredibly ahead of it’s time in some regards and incredibly of it’s time in others **cough cough** racism and colonialism *cough*. the 50 page detours from the story to go on random philosophical tangents was a choice…but i have to admit that points were made and i did copy down a number of passages.

all-in-all, glad i read it. would recommend to those who would like to intellectually flex at the grocery store.

Presents though provoking ideals through a very thin plotline. Though the ideas are quite intriguing, because it was meshed in with a story, it often becomes hard to follow both at once. However, if you are looking for something that will leave you dazed in thought when you close the covers, this is a great book for you.
