A reimagined world of Sherlock Holmes except there’s Angels, vampires, werewolves, hell hounds and other paranormal creatures. This was an interesting read and I liked it a lot.

it is TRULY offensive to me that Tor publishing (whom i follow across several platforms) did not inform me of this book long before it was released, and i had to learn from word of mouth. i purchased this the INSTANT i heard the author's name. i've told at least four separate groups of people in the past 2-3 weeks "katherine addison of The Goblin Emperor fame has written a book that's Sherlock Holmes in fantasy london where there are werewolves, vampires, angels etc." thats what you need to know.

i LOVED this book. was it GOOD, does it have LITERARY value, who could say, but it was SO fun. structurally i think it was a little busy trying to do all the sherlock holmeses all at once, the ending was kind of rushed, but here's the thing: that is so obviously not why i'm reading this. katherine addison thank you so much for writing this extremely emotive characters and making me care extremely about them. every time i checked the timestamp on my audiobook when i was listening to this, i was disappointed because it was too close to being over

DNF at 19%. I did not feel that this reimagining of the Sherlock Holmes stories added anything worthy to the original, and the story have me an unpleasant impression of poorly (over)written and unnecessarily bloated fanfiction.

Sherlock fanfiction with a supernatural twist - What’s not to like? Could’ve done with more backstory behind some of the introduced species & could’ve been a tad shorter.

I absolutely loved this. Perhaps it's not reinventing the wheel when it comes to Sherlock retellings, but it has just enough of everything I love that I'm a complete sucker for this book.

I really enjoyed the supernatural aspect as well as the dynamic between Crow and Doyle (our Sherlock and Watson in this case) and how it developed over the story. I also thought it was fun to make Crow just overall really pleasant and delightful and Doyle the cynic.

If you're familiar with Sherlock Holmes, the solution to most of the mysteries won't surprise you. The mysteries are presented in short parts/arcs kind of similar to the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. But this includes a few overlapping elements introduced in one case continue through this book as the order in which you read Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories doesn't really matter.

Is this book perfect? Technically no. At times it does read like fanfic (a high-quality one) and it's more an exploration of the alternate universe it created rather than a brand new story. However, I adored it. It was perfect in the fact where it was just something I enjoyed so much, halfway through reading my library copy, I went ahead and bought my own because I'd love to have it in my collection to read on a rainy day.

A remarkably kind-hearted and silly re-telling of Sherlock Holmes stories that started life (per the author, and obviously from page 10 or so) as a Sherlock wingfic. So good, and just what I needed in this world.
