I really enjoyed this book. Yes, the world building wasn’t fantastic; there were many elements left unexplained, or drip-fed in such a slow way that it became too frustrating to think about piecing them together. The stories are very familiar, being the most well-known of Sherlock and Watson’s cases so there was no tremendous novelty for that aspect of the plot. Yet I just couldn’t put it down. I adored it. I loved the take on Sherlock and Watson’s characters, and the dynamic between them was so captivating I found myself grinning by how adorable their interactions were. This has definitely become a comfort read for me and I’ll be reading it whenever I need something to put a smile on my face.
by far the most dramatic, insane thing i’ve ever read in my entire life. the amount of laughter (from pure shock) that came from this book could power the planet for a day and a half, at least
Interesting if a little tedious. Addison doesn’t quite hit the mark here and I think if I’d read this work first I wouldn’t have seemed out her other writings. Which would be highly unfortunate.
I came upon this book immediately following The Goblin Emperor, expecting something along those lines, and was terribly disappointed to find out that this was actually just a Sherlock Holmes retelling in an urban fantasy universe. However, after putting aside my high expectations, this was a fun book to read, especially since I do enjoy Sherlock retellings in all their various forms. There's enough fantasy elements sprinkled throughout to keep it from being too redundant, and I quite liked what they did with Doyle (this version's Watson) as well as the overarching Jack the Ripper mystery. Overall, it was fun, and I'm glad I stumbled upon it at my library and not full price at the bookstore.

Not for me, although I love Katherine Addison's other works. If I had known this would be a Sherlock retelling I wouldn't have picked it up.

I think I would have liked this book more if it weren’t Sherlock inspired and so much had been borrowed. I’d have rathered the author use her own mysteries, characters and everything. It was a creative imagining within that scope.
