Or 3.5 fun read tho I wish there were more overarching plot feels more like short story collection. Or it was advertised in a way that revealed that.
Apparently it just retells the Holmes stories? Guess I’ll have to read those next

Of all the Holmesverses I’ve encountered, this was by far my favorite. It was written with the same incredible attention to detail and gentle compassion for trauma as the Goblin Emperor, and a good satisfying length. I love the way we are dropped into the world and figure out the details bit by bit without a single tedious or poorly disguised infodump (yer a wizard, Harry

Sherlock Holmes retelling with the supernatural. It draws rather directly on classic Holmes stories, and while it does decently well with the subject of gender, it doesn't do a great job at examining race, even though it does treat most of the non-white characters with empathy. It also kind of starts letting Doyle's injured leg slip into the background later on.
It's also episodic in a way that is both obvious and a little jarring to me. Some of that was probably the audiobook just not priming me to think of the chapters as decidedly separate. Then again, they say at the end that all of the main Holmes events of the book happen in 4 or so months so maybe it was supposed go feel that fast.
It was a fun romp as Holmes based stories often are.

Interesting twists on a well-loved genre, this book neatly blends the occult with detective work, and friendship with ethics. Not the immense triumph of The Goblin Emperor but still a very enjoyable yarn.
