2.7⭐️ Okay… what the fuck? This book was filled with anticipation, slowly revealing “what happened” and flashing back and forth, which is usually something that intrigues me and I enjoy reading. Although it was droning on and on, I had high hopes for where this would end up. Turns out, “what happened” was some BS that any mother in her right mind would absolutely not go through with. I’m supposed to believe she thought that getting herself murdered would be the thing to set her children off on the right path in life? Ya right. This book was filled with some dark shit (should’ve known by the title I guess) but ended with such a stupid and messy reveal, leaving so many holes in the story. Disappointed as I enjoyed her other books

Got better as it went along, but not nearly as good as Sharp Objects.

Probably 3.5 stars.

I was so invested but the ending ruined it for me.

I read this in one go, it was a real page turner and very quick read. This book is quite dark since it's about a young woman trying to understand her family's massacre, many years after it happened. The chapters alternate between present time and the past, each time switching between different characters' points of view. I enjoyed the story itself, and there were never any "breaks" or slow parts in the investigation, but it seemed like Libby (the main character) overcame most obstacles and difficulties way to easily. She found missing people by looking them up on the internet, got their versions, always sensed when they were lying... the whole thing just felt too simple. Good plot though, I would still recommend this book because it's captivating and I like Flynn's style. I can't wait to see the movie adaptation now!

Scary and sad. Loved the complexity of the story. Libby was really loveable to me, she could be so empathetic yet hurtful and real. Lyle I liked getting to know. Ben was flawed but very interesting to read. Ending felt a litttttllleee bit coincidental but it worked. Reading the dual timelines together matched up nicely. Loved it but it did make me lock my doors and turn on the lights.
