Really enjoyed this one, maybe more than the other 2 of the series I have read. I especially liked some of the side stories like the Rose/Yrsa counter play and the continuing mystery surrounding his assistant Assad. But rest assured the main story is excellently told as well, while obviously not a whodunit, it is still a page turner as the net closes in on the protagonist.

The third of this Danish mystery writer's books to be translated into English. This is another Department Q story: manned by the surly, jaded chief detective Carl MØrck, Assad, the assistant he is slowly learning to trust (even with his mysterious background)and the grumpy secretary Rose (whose story is fleshed out a great more in this outing). As I mention every time I discuss his books with anyone, I enjoy them for a few reasons: I really like the characters-flawed, complex, human and therefore believable. I love his writing style (and probably the translator’s style)-stark yet beautifully descriptive. I also feel like I am getting an inside view on Danish society-politics, racism, Scandinavian relations-all are touched on as part of Carl’s daily conversations and actions. Lastly, the stories themselves are good ones-I don’t figure out the ending like I usually do in mysteries/police procedurals (which is why I rarely read them anymore).

This story concerns a serial killer who targets children in religious cults. He has been getting away with murder for years, as his targets don’t go to the ‘outside’ world for help. Only by accident does Department Q get wind of a kidnapping 13 years previous that leads Carl and his team on an emotional chase to find the killer before he kills again.

A quiet clean cut stranger joins small religious sect and cultivates a relationship with the richest members in order to pad his own fortune. Their silence allows his terrorizing to remain unstopped until Department Q receives the message in the bottle.

Man patīk galvenā sižeta līnija un blakus līnijas.
