It was okay as a graphic novel. It introduces the main character, Timothy Hunter, to the world of magic, but doesn’t go beyond that. I missed some more character focus and that probably happens in the next volumes.

This was pretty good, but there were some moments when it felt a little "long in the tooth." The point of the graphic novel, which actually collects a four-issue story, is to introduce Tim Hunter, a young 12-year old boy to the world of magic. He has the potential to be a great magician someday, but he has to choose to follow the path. He has four guides who will show him parts of the path along the way. If you like myth and fantasy, this is a book for you. Don't expect a lot of action; there is not that much of that. It is a lot of exposition, which is why I liked it, but I don't love it. I will add that the art of the book is excellent overall, and it goes along with the story very well. Overall, the set serves to set up Tim's future adventures. It is written by Neil Gaiman, so you can be assured it is well written and good stuff, but as I said, it is mostly an expository piece.

By the way, readers who enjoy this book would probably enjoy Alan Moore's Promethea, which has a very similar feel to this book. Moore's work does have some action to it.

This is a weird one. I'm not sure if I liked it yet. Perhaps I won't ever come to know.

May have to poke at this again; I think I missed some awesomeness the first time around.

Not so much a book as a tour. Young Tim Hunter, who is, let’s be honest, a bit of a git, gets given a choice. Become one of the greatest magicians in the world, or not. He also gets a magic owl named Yo-Yo and taken on a brief tour of the magic realms, including a trip to the US under the fatherly hand of John Constantine. Mets Merlin and Etrigan and Baba Yaga and Titania, Cain and Able, and the archetypes at the end of the universe. Refuses the call and goes home. Like that’s gonna work.

Self consciously Campbelllian, except that our titular hero is not the hero of the story. He gets pulled into the woods, meets a variety of goddesses, and other people fight a variety of threshold guardians (including one at the end of the universe) for him. He gets given gifts he does not deserve and does not understand and every one – but one- save his life. I’m dimly aware that Tim Hunter becomes one of the most powerful magicians in the universe and fights on one side or another (depending on the time line) of one of the greatest battles, but at this point, he’s 12 and has no idea what he’s being dragged into.

Good synthesis of a lot of material. Makes me glad John Constantine didn’t take me by the hand at 12 and told me I had a destiny.

Intresting. It didn't seem to have much of a plot, more like a long exposition. Yet I am still curious and want to read the next one....

I had no idea what this was about until I read it, and it actually ended up being pretty cool. Some of the ideas were really out there, but I loved the way everything tied together. I expected nothing else from Neil Gaiman.
