this book is just experiencing a constant sensation of falling, endlessly, right up until the end when Dazai slaps you in the face. a book that I feared to put down because halting the fall might lead me to return to rationality. its hard to rate, but the experience I had reading it was like very few other books.

It was written well, but a majority of it is just misogynistic. Since a lot of folks consider this a semi-autobiography, you have to wonder a lot about the author outside of whats already known, and none of the wondering leads to good roads...
A good chunk of this sets him up to be an unreliable narrator, given the types of thoughts he has about himself compared to what the people in his life say about him. He paints himself to be horrible, he does a lot of awful things, and yet the other characters are found saying he's not. While that may be the point of the story, it was still hard to push through with the rape and awful thoughts towards women. To be blunt, it reeks of '2edgy4me' vibes.
