where do I even begin 😭 while the experience reading this book was honestly not the most enjoyable (mostly because the plot is a bit slow, depressing, and explanatory, which i recognize was kind of the point), i genuinely connected incredibly deeply with the way yozo described his feelings towards events and his everyday life. the feeling of him being constantly mildly dissociated from everyone and everything in his life, along with his crippling belief that he will never belong with humans as a whole was really well explored. i also really enjoyed the ending, as I was really expecting it to go in a more upsetting direction, and the feeling that 'life goes on and that's just how life is' really closed the novel well imo. the ending makes the fact that this novel is essentially just autobiographical writings from the author a lot sadder but yea

This book never fails to haunt me every single time I return to it. I've never even been really sure how to properly review it, but it's a read that I highly encourage taking on at least once. The uncomfortable misogynistic notes leave a bad taste in my mouth, but it is also harrowing to read the inner reflections of a man who feels so out-cast by society that he rejects every single chance at human connection because of his firm convictions. The main character really strikes me as unique, a perspective I've not really read before in many novels, and I definitely enjoyed my re-read.

Sadly I related to the main character in many ways and he also made me feel some sort of disgust/contempt/pity which I suppose was the point. I didn't care much for the character which was probably also the point - I was experiencing the same disconnect and lack of care towards him as he describes having (reciprocally) with those around him. Very self-absorbed and no growth. It feels a bit weird rating this because it seems to essentially be an autobiography; I think it's a good insight into the author's mind, and that adds a bit of interest to the fact that the character is unlikeable in quite a boring, unexceptional way. We're all (well, most of us) boring and unexceptional really so it is perhaps more honest and raw than glamourised accounts of misery. As a novel, though, I just felt it was lacking... something. I was unmoved and I didn't learn anything. Trauma voyeurs and sad people who fancy themselves tragic heroes may be more likely to enjoy this book... I'm not sure really. Similar themes to A Little Life (which I enjoyed far less than this one).
