Dit boek was totaal anders dan ik had verwacht, maar het heeft me positief verrast! Op basis van de achterflap verwachtte ik een (‘regulier’) verhaal met bepaalde levensthema's. In het begin voldeed het daar ook aan, maar na ongeveer vijf pagina's stopte het verhaal en veranderde het in 'wijsheden' die de boogschutter aan de leerling overbracht via quotes en gezegden. Deze inzichten zijn te vertalen naar andere levensthema’s en deden me denken aan de boeken van Haemin Sunim. Het was een prachtig zenboek waar ik enorm van genoten heb.

This was a good story. I debated between three and four stars for a couple of reasons. One reason is that this book is not what I expected; instead of a full plot it's more like the beginning of a plot, a lot of life/philosophical advice, and the end of a plot. That's all well and good, but Coelho's novels usually include more plot than this. I just expected more of a full story. The other reason is that while a lot of the messages are good and I can see the purpose behind the story, it's just not fulfilling. That is probably due to the reason aforementioned. All in all, it was a good story with a lot of relatable advice. I can tell this is a book that is trying to tell people how to live, or at least elude to it. But a lot of the lessons described are applicable to so many things and I can tell that was the point. He used a simple story to convey a much greater meaning. I don't want to sound like I didn't like the story, because I did, it just was not as good as Coelho's other novels that I've read. I will definitely be thinking about this book a lot, though.
