The question is not "what the fuck happened in this book", the question is "why did I continue reading after the first chapter"

i liked this less the longer it went on even though i binged it in a day and a half - it's hard to say what i liked about it other than the fact that it kept me engaged. the latter half of the book was disappointing. idk how to rate it

God this writing was just so clunky. No characterization/personal motivations to speak of, unnatural and ellipse-filled dialogue, and a poor set up. Suddenly we just arrive at this school? Idk it just all felt so middle-grade, like exactly what you would write if you were 14 and told to write a spooky magic model (
“Go complete the ritual or else something bad will happen to your mom” “Good job now go to this special school”
Hello??). Unclear how much of this is reading in translation but I don’t want to attribute poor characterization and flat motives to simply the Russian language cuz I don’t think that’s what’s going on here…

Sorry to Esohe </3

hypnotic. it's a pity i read it in the english translation; i could feel the russian underneath and sometimes, when a word or a sentence or grammar structure didn't feel quite right, the difference between the language families felt quite stark. then again, given the themes and plot of the novel, this amount of thinking about words and grammar was entirely appropriate. anyway, most reviews are incorrect and this is not at all like if harry potter was written by kafka. i am so happy to announce that this is instead like an unholy child of kuang's poppy war and cartarescu's solenoid.

I really don't know whether I loved or hated this book. It was super mysterious at first but I felt like it fell through towards the end. The writing was beautiful but there was some utterly gross content (not just Kafkaesque).

A fascinating story about a young girl who is forced to attend a high school studying really weird stuff - none of which makes sense, until it does but it's too late to escape then. This is an irrational, semantic story but I would have liked to have an appendix or an epilogue to clear things up a bit.
