I find a lot of books that center around "nerd culture" kind of cringey, so they need good characters to balance that out. I thought this one was enjoyable, but might have benefited from being a bit longer

I don't have a clue what cosplay is or why fandom exists but I still enjoyed this book. We meet three best friends from Austraila visiting the states for SUPERCON. We see the story through Charlie and Taylors' eyes. Charlie just got her first break in a movie making her superstar, while recovering from a very public break up and accepting her feelings as her own no matter the gender. Taylor has autism and being in public sets off panic attacks. Jamie is the third best friend and we only see them through their story.

Not knowing much about cosplay the author brought me into this world and made it real for me. She brings light to the autism spectrum and is sensitive to the disorder and makes the reader feel Taylor's pain.

I wished we could of have Jamie's POV too.

I loved seeing the autistic and bi representation in this book, but I wish I connected more with the characters. As an autistic person, I found most of the book was very surface level and flitted between scenes without ever getting deep, so I was a little disappointed.

Rep: autism, anxiety, lesbian, bisexual

I love the Convention setting and how nerdy the MCs are. I really enjoyed the dual POV between Charlie and Taylor.

THIS BOOK WAS ADORABLE AND MADE ME SMILE A LOT. The friendships, the relationships, the nerdiness, the casual but obvious diversity by an ownvoices author. It was all so good!!! Longer review later but if you love YA contemp and esp if you love fandom culture you have to read this :)

ojalá hubiese leído este libro con quince años. porque ahora no tuvo el impacto en mí que creo que se espera - la mayoría de las cosas que me dijo yo ya las sé. pero mi yo de quince hubiese llorado mucho con este libro, creo.

Super fun and quick read featuring A+ diversity, awesome friendships, heart-melting swoon, delightful nerdiness, and excellent characters.

Two quotes I loved:

"'So?' Charlie shrugs. “Gracie Hart rocks. Besides, there’s no one way to be a girl, Tay. You don’t need to fit yourself into what society tells us a girl should be. Girls can be whoever they want. Whether that’s an ass-kicking, sarcastic, crime-solving FBI agent or a funny, gorgeous, witty beauty queen—or both at the same time.' She swings an arm around me and pulls me in. 'Are you happy the way you are? Are you comfortable? Do you feel like yourself?'

The corner of my mouth lifts into a half smile. 'Yes. Yes. And yes.'

'Then that’s all that matters. Fuck everything else.'"

From Taylor's Tumblr:

"It pisses me off that the world thinks my body is my most important quality. And that everything else about me is somehow secondary, or measured against my appearance like some sort of gauge for worthiness. Fuck that shit. To the girl who hid in the shadows and tried to body-shame me, I’m sorry you thought that was a good use of your time and energy. I hope you find happiness within yourself. You deserve that. We all do. And if you do find that happiness, I hope no one ever tries to take it away from you. No one deserves that." [PREACH ON, FRIEND.]

Super cute. Probably closer to a 3.5.
