Muñoz's thinking of queer utopias and how they interact with the past is worthy of great consideration - however, I feel that this book has some issues in terms of cis-gay-male-centrism that speaks to larger issues in the lens through which LGBTQ+ utopias are imagined. That's not to say that this is the fault of the author or that the intersection of past and future aren't worthy of consideration through the art that he examines - however, it is something that I wished I'd have known ahead of time as a trans woman. The concept of 'ephemera as evidence' is one that particularly resonated with me - queer artists leaving traces which speaks to a larger queer existence, and their imaginings of how the future could be. Overall, I think that the argument for queer hope that I found in this book is one of the strongest I've seen - if you are looking for somewhere to find joy or trying to look towards a queer horizon, this is the book for you.

sadly, my theory brain could not switch on. needed a Muñoz scholar to help me understand and appreciate this/connect it more to things? maybe now i can read other queer theory that will relate to this and things will make more sense. still glad i read

really glad i read this (makes me feel much more equipped to approach other queer theory texts) -- put into words a lot of general thoughts i've had about the assimilationist ick of gay rights, we can and should ask for more!

well obvi 5 stars for the book that inspired my thesis

I will think about this book for the rest of my life. Revolutionary in my understanding of my own queerness, especially the first few chapters and the main ideas of the book. I am no sociologist or expert in queer history so much of it went over my head. It also focusses much more on cis gay men so I was longing for something more directly applicable to my life. Someone smarter than me could make an amazing video essay about it.

100th book of 2022!!
