4.5 ⭐️. If you’re a mother, a wife, a fiancée, have a man in your life, or just truly feel like you have a large mental load, then please, please, please read this book. I have never felt more seen or more understood while reading a book of fiction. This book was full of humorous moments. Also, can someone actually create The Wife app? K. Thx.
I am reading such good books these days. This book is a feminist look at the tech industry where three women create an app to monetize the work and Mental Loads that women take on for free in traditional marriages. The writing was light and fun like a rom-com. There was romance later in the book and it made me giddy with joy. QUEER REP, NON-BINARY REP, FUCKING POP OFF. I loved this book in every way and I think you’ll love it too. Read it!!!!

Wives have so many responsibilities and obligations leading to “mental (over) load”. There’s so much that we do so routinely and can sometimes become daunting. Enter the wife app…
I liked “The Wife App”, until I didn’t.
So, the likes:
💍The Wife App itself – built to help busy moms/wives with daily tasks (filling out school applications, planning vacays)
💍The ladies’ friendship; support and building their brand. Kudos to them!
💍The “wife” jobs and interactions with their clients.
💍NYC was the perfect locale.
Dislikes:
💍Too many forced things in the end that sent the story off the rails. A strong case of “doing too much” IMO!
💍I had issues with Madeline’s parenting. I couldn’t get over Madeline’s nonchalance when her daughter shared that 8th grade girls were charging for blowjobs at school. Whett?! I know there’s nothing she could do about other girls, but just to have no reaction?! Have people really lost all concept of morals, right/wrong, decency, self-respect? And, then the kid gonna throw things in the home and tell her the conversation is over and walk out. Oh hell nah! I wish…
💍 The main issue Madeline was dealing with just suddenly fell off. How was this parenting issue resolved?
💍The man-hating. All of the men were pretty vile and the book gives the impression that men don’t contribute ( as much as they should) around the house or with the kids. Was Colin supposed to be one of them? There’s nothing wrong with a father wanting his daughter to spend a year in London, building a relationship. At all!
💍 Sofie was such a pushover, but I was glad that she started to find her voice. But, the way her story ended?! 🫥
I’m left wondering, if we pay a service to do our motherly/wifely duties, what are we left to do? Things that make you go Hmmm…
It was a fairly easy listen/read. I would love to see this on Netflix – there’s the potential for things to get wild with the “wife requests” people would come up with. Now, if only I can sign up to get a wife…

Historically girls are raised with the idea that they should want to be a wife and a mom. Throw in to that mix is you can have it all by adding a successful career. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to have it all there is the problem of doing it all. Often it is doing it all with little help.
Three best friends have decided that they are going to keep doing it all but think it is time that women should be compensated for all of their work. The Wife App is born, or should I say developed? Through the app you can hire a wife to do all the jobs of life you don't like. Say you hate filling out school forms, there is a wife that will do it. Pay a monthly fee and have access to your own wife. Maybe you are a women who kind of likes filling out those forms. Sign up to be a wife and actually get paid to do it. Seems like a glorious win win. This is how our story begins.
You will follow the app development and the bumps along the way. Those of the app and those of our three protagonists. Overall, it is a pretty good read. I liked getting to know these characters and they are all pretty likeable. It just didn't seem to all flow well. The premise of this book is that life is messy and hard. I didn't really feel that with these women. The book is a slow burn until the last quarter of the book. A pretty good read, and if you want to make the Wife App a real thing, sign me up. I need someone to chauffeur my kids around.

I’ve had a bit of a hard time getting into this story, as I’m usually not a huge fan of children in books. In the end I did fly through the book and it was enjoyable. It just wasn’t the book for me.

This is a strange book to review. I really enjoyed the writing style. It's conversational/day in the life type of stuff and reminds me of the movie First Wives Club. Multiple POV with occasional flashbacks. We follow 3 single divorced moms who start an app to shoulder the mental load of people in New York. I relate to carrying a lot of the mental load in a family and the idea of outsourcing it is appealing. Lauren seems to be the center of the story, with her POV bookending the novel, and I think she's the best developed character. Sophie's storyline stumped me the most. I was enjoying her story arc and then things took an interesting (forced?) turn. Madeline was the least interesting as she seemed stagnant until the story was nearly over. There were so many issues brought up in this book, and while I appreciate them being recognized, the solutions were glossed over or never mentioned at all. (Gig worker rights, sliding scales, etc) I would have liked to see more detail, but maybe it would have been too tangential. I do like that the ex-husbands weren't all monsters and had more of a spectrum. The stories of the sttange tasks peopleasked them to complete were funny, and some of the situations they encountered were quite realistic and relatable. Overall, the book was decent and I would try something else by this author.
