So boring

Fell asleep
a little after the shoplifting and reveal
and did not feel compelled to revisit.

I loathed this — LOATHED, loathed, loathed. It was (unfortunately for me) my once-every-few-years book that I suffered through despite knowing I hated it less than halfway in out of pure pettiness and rage. It reminded me of why I don’t read books by men. I am exaggerating! I was a Russian major in college! But, like, fucking god. How fucking two-dimensional and worthless can someone write his women (and GIRL) characters? What in the fucking rape-apologist nihilistic classist garbage? Rape apologism from the perpetrator and then, in between, before we get even more of that, some kind of through-composed fucking fantasia from the “victim’s point of view” (in quotes bc this whole goddamn book stinks grotesquely of male POV; it is so two-dimensional — not half a word that feels like it could belong to a woman) where she like, fantasizes about her abuser? Are you fucking kidding me? This was like reading Secret History fanfic where the author actually thinks those people are really fascinating and that their thought processes as overprivileged rich white people are what make TSH fascinating (that is…not the case). So pretentious, so fucking endlessly navel-gazing, so much deadly and awful male-gazey bullshit packed into so short a book! This is as bad as it gets. I literally threw the book down in a rage when I finished it. I cannot overstate how much this simply fucking sucked.

Disjointed writing is hard to follow. It’s boring and the flashbacks are confusing. Don’t care to finish because the characters are unlikable.

I’m still confused. I don’t think I liked this. The writing was so convoluted in the beginning, but that I was able to get used to. What I couldn’t wrap my head around were these icky, selfish characters. I hated them, but I’m pretty sure that’s the point. I can see people going either way on this one, but for me it’s a big, fat meh.
