Book 16 so I am obviously invested in the series and the characters. I love the intricate world of Elantra. There is just some rich vivid detail for every species and the world in general. As it tends to happen a lot of this book was dedicated to one species and one tower. It is still really hard to read the details. Overall I loved the story and the development but the details were harder to absorb.

The candallar aspect was unexpected but it made sense, so did the hint of romance between one of the important characters.

I am starting to think like the war on shadow is neverending this series is never ending, which maybe I am okay with.

This is going to be a pretty short review. I'll just say this: 16 books on Sagara manages to push the boundaries of Elantra (both literally and figuratively) and while I sometimes wish we knew where this was all heading (you know aside from a confrontation with you know a Black Dragon) I am always glad when another book hits the shelves.

This book was so fantastic, I loved the watching the two ladies both wanting the now unmanned tower! Such a great read and I can't wait for the next one!

Eh, moved the story along I guess, and I enjoyed it but this one was even more about interpersonal dramas than usual. I'm happy to have it, glad the writer wrote it, but I expect the next book she writes in any series to be better than this one. And since I believe I have read all of her books, I believe I can safely say this. I like the universe and Kaylin and look forward to more of it but this specific book is just ... I think I'd be very happy about it if the next book was also finished, but the wait a year between books publishing schedule can make books feel more underwhelming than they are. Last time I think I did a whole series re-read to lead up to the release, and that might also improve my enjoyment. Maybe next book I'll do that again.

-5 stars.
love this series. i like that kaylin doesn't always just know what to do, or know what she's doing even as she's doing it. a book can can get old fast when easy magic is the short answer for every problem in books. there's always more than 'easy magic' required in michelle sagara's worlds.
-the author does however have problems with alliteration in names. serralyn, sedarias, sanabalis, karriamis, kariannos, kaylin, killian.

"i hate titles. why do we need to have fifteen different ways of calling a person?" [this made me laugh because in other books this author has written there are royal titles and military titles and names, all three given to the same character, and she refers to them by all the various titles at different points! which i find confusing as well.]

"hungry students are artificially stupid students."

"her reactions were her reactions, yes. the were visceral and instinctive. but her behavior was a choice."

"have i made the mistake of somehow inviting your opinion?" [i need to remember this line!]

"this is not a good idea."
"no, but most of the best ones aren't."

"it is much harder for some to have faith in themselves than it is to have faith in others."

"she rolled her eyes hard enough she should have sprained them."

"how we deal with failure, how we deal with what it means about ourselves and our own capabilities, says more about us than almost anything else could."

"it is easy for either of us -for all of us- to believe that it was not her fault. what we think doesn't matter, it is what she feels that does. this is hers to untangle."

While I really liked this, I don't think it was as good as others. It did feel like a filler novel with some action at the end.
