I think this is supposed to be set in a similar if not the same world as Defensive Baking...at least, the cover art and age of the protagonist make me think they're adjacent to each other (along with Minor Mage which is on my reading list currently). I didn't like this as much as DB; I thought that Rosa , bird companion Payne, and bff Serena weren't as charming or charismatic as Mona, Bob the sourdough starter, and her lil gingerbread champion, but this was ultimately still entertaining. I thought Rosa and Serena's relationships with their respective families was rather wholesome and sweet. There's not too much violence (at least that stood out to me/from what I could remember it was less and also less gory compared to DB) and would feel comfortable recommending this to younger readers who are looking for more action/adventure and a longer reading challenge.

It’s an odd little book, and I struggled to stay invested in it bedside - since it’s for kids - I never quite doubted things would be alright in the end, which lowered the stakes. But I liked the characters and the art focus, and it reminded me quite a bit of Encanto.

Another super cute story by T. Kingfisher. I think my favorite thing about this series/world is how magical even the most mundane things can be. This was a cute, fast read. Highly recommend as a palette cleanser or a read with the little ones.
