A very sweet book, probably more intended for younger readers but I still really enjoyed the lighthearted and funny story

This had a bit of a frustrating beginning - frustrating as only a child acting like an actual child can be through an adult reader's eyes - but the rest was sweet, whimsical and original, exactly what I expected and wanted from the author.

Kingfisher keeps on getting better and better so books like this one, where the pacing doesnt work so well, stand out more and more. That being said all the characters were lovely and the story was cute.

This was cute. A bit young for me, personally, but I'd buy it for a kid of my acquaintance, and I bet third-grade me would have adored it.

lighthearted

This book was incredibly creative and incredibly fun. I found myself laughing out loud in the first few pages, reading descriptions of illuminations and their purpose. Part coming-of-age story, part adventure, I found the story to be sweet without being saccharine, though it got close occasionally. It's fun to get to know Rosa's eclectic family of artists, and I appreciated that the plot strayed from the 'kids-have-to-solve-this-without-adults-knowing' trope. If you like creative adventures and tales of collaborative heroism (especially with strong female leads), don't miss this tale!
