A great lighthearted family friendly story that's well written with wonderful characters, an interesting plot and set in a fun world.
This is most definitely a YA book, but it has Kingfisher's signature hope rather than the angsty-ness common in those books. It caught me so off-guard at several points in the story I had to put the book down for fear that our main character would be emotionally hurt because "of course someone is going to be mean to her". But I should have trusted that Kingfisher would not let me down and have reasonable and caring people their stories.
3.5 stars. I'm so sad I didn't like this one the same as Wizard's Guide To Defensive Baking and Minor Mage. I know that they are not a part of a series but WGTDB and MM felt like a part of one world, and I'm desperate to know what's up with those zombie crayfish.
Illuminations felt like a world of its own. And in that world, we spent most of our time inside of one family's house.
The family and the message were amazing. The story was good. Maybe I just expected to get more minor mages and I didn't.
