I'm currently reading Illuminations by T. Kingfisher. I'm reading the ebook. Reading this for the T. Kingfisher readalong I'm doing on Discord. This is a middle grade fantasy book.
Loving this so far! I thought this was young adult, so I did need some time to get into it. The main character is pretty naive, so therefore I was thrown off a bit. But now that I understand that it is actually a middle grade book, I enjoy it a lot! Really love the concept and that painting is such a big part of the book. The magic is super cool and original. Super fun read so far.
In the end this one wasn't my favorite. The story felt a bit too repetitive for me and not very suspenceful. I did love the characters a lot, therefore this rating.

I love the comfort reading T. Kingfisher provides. But Illuminations was too cozy for me.
It is aimed at the younger end of the YA spectrum . It could easily be categorized as middle grade.
While there is some tension, Rosa is coddled, loved and protected by her family and any tension is the result of a misunderstanding. She is the center of the universe and saves the day.
There are no real consequences to the mistakes she makes.
I preferred the plot of Minor Mage, where a protagonist of a similar age group has to deal with peril without adult assistance and with only minor magical powers. Assisted only by his trusty familiar.

A very sweet book. Loved the focus on art and protection of community. Loved how the friendship dynamic worked. I really thought that the author might take the ending of the book to a more understanding/empathetic/talk things out route, so I was a little disappointed by that, but otherwise a very nice read.
