This is a really good-quality psychological thriller that explores several strands of culture and humanity, including class divisions, family dynamics, mother-daughter relationships, psychotherapists and their ethics (or lack thereof), and the negative effects of gaslighting on the family truthteller. In this case, Rachel is the truthteller in her family, who inadvertently becomes aware of a dirty little secret of her father's at a vulnerable age, then is scapegoated when she goes to her mother in a state of distress about the situation. Due to having no outlet for her distress and the general gaslighting she experiences from that point on, she becomes defined as the family 'problem child'.

Despite her issues, Rachel takes refuge in her studies, does well academically, and gets a good job. However, things start to fall apart for her in her early 30s and her mother, Lily, seeks out a therapist she has heard good things about through word of mouth.

Lily seems to strenuously believe that her reaction to Rachel's distressing discovery was all in the best interests of the wider family unit, and acts genuinely perplexed that the daughter she denied emotional support to at a crucial time in her life now has issues with addiction. The plot centers around what unfolds when Rachel falls under the spell of the rather unethical, creepy, and manipulative therapist, Amber, who is determined to ensure that Lily's house of cards crumbles down.

Rachel and Lily narrate alternate chapters in the book, with Amber's point of view represented toward the end. It's well-plotted book with believable characters, and definitely worth a read if you enjoy psychological thrillers.

As far as I am aware this is Kate Ruby’s debut novel and it was definitely one she should be extremely proud of.

3 Women. 3 Secrets. How long will they stay hidden and how dangerous will they be?

#TellMeYourLies is a suspenseful psychological thriller following Nick and Lilly, their daughter Rachel who is addicted to alcohol and drugs and her therapist Amber.

As you read more about the family, you begin to understand why the kids all have their individual issues, Rachels being the centre of the book. After too much partying and one too many trips to the hospital after drug and alcohol binges her parents decide something needs to change. They enlist the help of Amber, a therapist and healer who may seem to be causing more problems than solving them.

Told from the retrospective viewpoints of Rachel and Lily, the author does a great job of diving into the heads of some very messed up people and exploring their family dynamics.

I must admit, I figured the twist out a few chapters ahead of the big reveal but it was done so well that I then was desperate to read the read of the book to see if I was right. Usually, I’d see this as a bit of a disappointment but it just made the ending even more riveting.

If you are a fan of domestic thrillers, then this is one you should pick up when it is released in May 2022.
