Healing from Hidden Abuse: A Journey Through the Stages of Recovery from Psychological Abuse
Shannon Thomas
I appreciated and felt connected to everything about types of abuse, how abuse is performed, how it feels, and the stages of overcoming. However, I did not like the fact that the author suggested over and over that the only people capable of performing these types of abuse are narcissistic, sociopath, or psychopath. People with borderline personality disorder are just as capable of abusing in these ways, as are I'm sure people with other personality disorders. I felt like my own experience of being abused was minimized by the book since my abuse has come from a borderline person, not a narcissist, sociopath, or psychopath. I would really appreciate if the author would update their stance on this topic in the book, as I feel that it's misleading and may leave people such as myself feeling unseen or unjustified in our hurt and trauma.
I recently became interested in the topic of non-physical abuse when my own journey in life made me aware that abuse isn't always physical.
I first learned of this topic through Shannon's Facebook page. Her book explores in depth the journey a survivor goes through when shedding toxic people from their life. The toxicity could exist in many areas including enforcing spiritual life, financial irresponsibility, constant criticism, or any other behavior that negatively impacts another's worldview through control and manipulation.
I learned about dysfunctional behaviors and the types of "red flags" to watch for, as well as what a survivor's experience may be like.
This book has the depth, compassion and empathy that I want to share with the survivor.

This book helped me so much in recovering from gaslighting, and trying to make sense of behaviors that I wouldn't wish on my worse enemy. This focus on this book is healing yourself, and helped me move away from trying to make sense of "why did they do that?".
Like any self-help book about abuse, it can stir up painful emotions, so be sure to take breaks and be gentle with yourself.

“Not all people we meet deserve to be in our inner circles. Survivors have worked way too hard to develop clean living to then allow unhealthy people to remain in close proximity. Those two worlds do not go together. An individual doesn’t even have to be “toxic” to be undeserving of a place in your life. Access to you is a gift. The ability to call you, text you, e-mail you, see you, come to your home, and basically share space in your life is earned, not easily given. At least it should be. It is yours to parcel out as you choose.”

For anyone who has been the victim of (or is the survivor of, the term the author prefers) psychological abuse, emotional abuse, coercive control, financial abuse, etc. THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ. It helps to reinforce the unfortunate facts that the experience was not your fault, was not love, and does not deserve another second of your time or energy.
For all those who need a little pep talk to stay strong and move on.... this book is well worth the read.

This book was very well put together and informative. Though not all of my experiences were accurately described (my abuser had a different comorbidity of personality disorders) the techniques for recovery are very useful. However I was also a little disappointed in how general the terms and info was. Though that does make it more accessible, I have a psychology degree and am used to more technical works, personally.
