This was a warm, rich, wonderful, simple book. I suppose I loved it particularly because it came to me at a time I desperately needed to read something like this. So this is a very personal review that might not apply to other people and other times. But in the here and now, I thought that Ms Slate is a funny and audacious writer. She is also very human and vulnerable and needy — aren't we all? Her beauty and bravery lies, in part, in taking a piece of her heart and putting it out into the world for us to read (and critique!). And because of this, I am in awe of her.
Loved this. Gift it to your friends.

Read this back in 2021, rereading it again because of heartbreak, such a special book

Lots of writers I love adored this book, and while I found some of the stories and essays within it endearing, I don’t share their view. That’s disappointing but OK!!!

I don’t even know how to describe this book. It was everything I wanted but nothing I expected. Slate’s imagination and vulnerability are so beautiful. The words are both magical and poetic. Somehow humorous, outlandish and yet relatable.

Struggling that I put this as three stars because I LOVE Jenny Slate. But realistically I was only really invested about 60-70% of the time so that’s where I settled. Someone described this book as performance art and I think that’s a great way to view it!

Delicious read every single time. This book is so personal and transformative and comforting and I will hold it close to my heart forever. Jenny Slate, you are the older sister I wish I had and I would do anything for you. Also, thank you for introducing me to Clarice Lispector
