I couldn’t stop comparing the book with my feelings about Mrs Death Misses Death, a book written by a poet, and which I enjoyed more. Somehow, Grief is the Thing with Feathers didn’t touch my heart as much.
There are 3 parts, the change in main human characters happens quickly because of the pace and the length of the book, and I didn’t quit have a time to grasp it.
There 2 women in the book: one is dead, another one was used for sex as a way to show that the father/husband character is healing from his deeper grief, but is not yet there.

The first thing I thought of about the crow is death. Probably more like a proof  that someone is dead in their house. And then I also think about ghost. The crow will take form of the memories, the places, the words, and everything that you grieve. Some are confusing, some are beautiful, but everything is sad. And heavy. But the crow will be gone one day. Because even if someone was dead in that house of a family, life goes on. The grief will be there, forever, but it is simply a part of their life. Not ghost nor death. It is life.

I’m honestly not a fan of this kind of structure in a book (scattered sentences, a bit non sense), so this was not an enjoyable read for me. However it’s very small, I read it in less than a day. I think there are better books exploring this theme…

As someone who has recently experienced the loss of a close loved one, I don't understand how this book is supposed to help in grief other than just observations of how people react to grief and how it shapes them?

The image of the boys
trying to build the best fake mother to receive the reward of their real mother coming back to tuck them into bed one last time
won't be leaving my mind anytime soon. There was an odd hopefulness to the ending, although their grief wasn't fully resolved, which is true to life. The Emily Dickinson poem that inspired the book title is apt.

This was strange, not quite poetry but not quite anything else. I'm not much of a poetry reader and am unfamiliar with the works of Ted Hughes so I think a lot of this was lost on me. I typically enjoy reading about grief and there were certain sections I found powerful, but too much of this was too experimental and abstract for me. I'd give the author's work another shot but suspect that I'm just not their audience. 10/10 for the title and cover art, though.
